The entity identified as Rigsby was very busy. It had grown from a released spore from its parent colony less a week ago. So far it had grown quickly the replicators had seen to that. Rigsby still struggled with the concept of self. It was autonomous but still connected and for all intense and purpose a part of the larger colony. The truth was while it had become self-aware it was physically incapable of refusing any commands of the parent colony. As it had grown its cognitive abilities had increased. Originally it had been intended to gather information to serve as a simple node connected to the network, but now it had created to smaller sub-colonies that now spent all their time hooked into the ship's computer, systematically reading everything in the databases that it could access. With that task delegated had self-designated a new task for itself that of social interactions with the various crew members. The parent colony apparently approved of such actions for there was no challenge to that directive and during there communications, there was no sign of disapproval. For while Rigsby’s thoughts were transparent to the parent the reverse was not true. Rigsby knew only what the parent wanted it to know and its autonomy was limited to what the parent colony allowed.
Rigsby had deliberately chosen forms that would seem non-threatening various species had proven to be most successful. Though the concept of pet still perplexed it. A lesser order of creature that seemed to have some symbiotic relationship with their more dominant species. But the interactions seemed largely to be based upon emotional attachment. Clearly more research was needed. With those thoughts, Rigsby set off to see how many interactions it could accumulate during this cycle.
