Decisions, Decisions

Posted on Sat Apr 24th, 2021 @ 8:46am by Captain Michelle Bartlett

Michelle had changed out of dress uniform from the ceremony, aching to get back into a regular uniform that was at least a bit more comfortable. She strode out of her quarters and headed down the corridor to the turbolift, acknowledging crew that had nodded to her along the way. She would move into the actual Captain's quarters tomorrow.

"Bridge." She called out as the door closed. The turbolift whirred its way towards the main deck. As the door swished open, Michelle again saw Lieutenant Ila sitting in the centre chair, and the crew busy. Ila stood up immediately, causing Michelle to notice.

"As you were." Michelle said. "I'll just be in the ready room."

"Aye, ma'am." came the reply.

She walked into the ready room, seeing it was mostly cleaned out, almost sterile except for one plant. It appeared to have been entirely stripped of any character it might have had. Of course, the reason made sense. It was prepared for a new Commanding Officer. And she would have to add her own character to it. How many meetings or discussions must have been had in this room? Maybe even occasional admonitions.

How many decisions were made behind that desk... How many regrets were expressed outside view of the rest of the crew?

She stood in front of the desk, pausing for a moment almost like she wanted to say something to the vacant seat in front of her. But not yet. It was still a weird feeling to her. She had been through transfers before but this one was as different as Jason warned her about.

She took the seat - her seat - behind the desk, and accessed the console that arose from the it. She furrowed her brow in confusion as the Federation emblem appeared, indicating *ONE MESSAGE*

"Mail already?" Michelle asked aloud. "Hmm. Well... let's see what its about."

She pressed a button on the desk panel, and a middle aged man with greying hair appeared on the viewer, the previous Captain given the rank insignia.

"Hello, Captain. If you're viewing this... Well, I either got promoted to Admiral, got dragged kicking and screaming to a new command or I should have listened to Commander T'Prymm about leading an away mission. If this is T'Prymm.... Sorry? I guess?" the man said. "I made this in case there was no change of command ceremony to meet you at. Either because I got shuffled back to Earth, sent to a different ship before I could say goodbye, or something bad happened and I was killed." Reynolds' image said.

"I know, I know... was it really necessary for me to do this?" the former Captain asked. "This ship was my baby. I took command of it maybe wanting to do 2 years in the Delta Quadrant at most because even with the technology we have to get to and from it? It's a ways away from home. It was a nice little break from Cardassians and Romulans and all the drama in the Alpha Quadrant. But I liked it out here more than I thought I would. Although the homesickness is legitimately the worst."

"Whether you were out closer to the home quarter, or have been out here a ways yourself, 'What the hell did I get myself into?' is probably a fair question. But I wanted you to know that you have a good crew. They'll do what you ask of them. They've never failed a task I've given them yet. I won't tell you what to do or how to do it. After all, it's your ship now and you're probably already confused enough watching this. I just wanted to wish you good luck, to tell you to look after them... And if you get the chance, tell them I was happy I never once had to doubt any of their capabilities. You'll come to know the senior staff as well as I did. I'm sure they'll have some reservations but... They'll warm up to you. Good luck with the ship, Captain. Reynolds out."

Michelle sat back in the chair. "Don't worry... We'll all be fine." she said, almost regretting she'd never met him. A pity that the change of command had been a far messier affair than even his farewell message anticipated.

"Computer, access all department head personnel files and access any entries from Captain Reynolds' official logs regarding them." Michelle requested. There was now the matter of picking a new first officer.
